The 29th DAMOP Meeting, joint with the Division of Atomic and Molecular Physics of the Canadian Association of Physicists, will be held at the Sweeney Convention Center [Registration Desk/Messages 505-984-6724] in the historic downtown area of Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday through Saturday, 27-30 May 1998, continuing the four-day format started in 1996. A welcoming reception will be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 26 at the nearby Palace of the Governors on the Plaza from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Lodging is available in nearby hotels at special rates. Overflows will be accommodated at other hotels that provide vans to the Sweeney Center. Reservations should be made directly with the hotels, mentioning the DAMOP'98 meeting. To assure getting the special rates, reservations should be made by April 24, 1998. Economical student housing is available at college dormitories with shuttle service provided; the number of rooms is limited so we request that they be saved for bona fide students.
The Local Organizing Committee includes members from Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of New Mexico, Sandia Laboratories, and the Air Force Research Laboratory - Phillips Research Site.
Nonresidents needing letter of invitation to obtain visa: Please contact Karen MacFarland (macfarla@aps.org) at the American Physical Society, with your name, address, and title of presentation and session, if any.
Santa Fe has a small municipal airport with service to Denver. However, most participants will find it more economical and convenient to travel to the Albuquerque International Airport and make the transit (about one hour) to their Santa Fe hotel on the Shuttlejack (bus). Reservations for the Shuttlejack, presently $20 one-way, should be made 24 hours in advance at (505)982-4311, FAX: (505)983-5918. Rental cars are also possible but not encouraged since parking is limited in the downtown area of Santa Fe.
Santa Fe, "The City Different", is a very old and historic community, renowned for its culture, arts, places to stay and dine, as well as nearby Pueblos and outdoor attractions. Late May is normally dry with cool nights and early mornings (47 F low / 73 F high). For more information, visit the Web sites of the Convention and Visitors Bureau or Santa Fe Online.
Santa Fe is about 35 miles from Los Alamos and about 60 miles from Albuquerque.

The 1998 Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics Meeting will provide a forum for presenting scientific work in either a contributed lecture format or a poster. We strongly encourage all authors to submit their abstracts electronically, and the APS offers the following general information regarding procedures for electronic submission.
Submitting electronically has several advantages over mailing a paper abstract:
You can obtain the files for preparing and submitting your abstract (see sorting categories) by sending an e-mail to abs-request@aps.org and including the phrase "request DAMOP98" in the body of your e-mail message. For further information about the submission process, see the APS Electronic Abstract Instructions.
NOTE: Though the regular submission deadline has passed, abstracts received by April 8 will still be published in the Bulletin of the American Physical Society and scheduled for a poster session as post-deadline submissions if space permits. The submission procedure is the same as above.
Poster sessions: There will be poster sessions on each day of the meeting in Rooms 3 and 4 of the Sweeney Convention Center. Contributors are urged to mount their presentations early so other participants can view the posters throughout the day. The display panels are approximately 4 feet by 4 feet (see actual layout & dimensions) and are cloth covered; materials must be attached with Velcro which will be provided (thumb tacks or tape will not work). Poster presentations must be taken down at the end of the session.
Audiovisual equipment: All rooms for oral sessions will be equipped with overhead projectors. 35 mm slide projectors will be provided to those who so requested in their abstract submission. Other equipment (VCR's, etc.) can be requested with rental cost prepaid by the author; please contact the Local Chair (damop@t4.lanl.gov) before May 1 for such needs.
The Local Organizers are planning a Conference Experience for Undergraduates, supported by NSF and DOE DP Educational Programs, which will have activities during the meeting as well as a follow-up enrichment week. There will also be a special session at the DAMOP meeting with undergraduate students presenting their research.
NSF and NIST are providing some travel funds for students. Interested students should fill in the on-line application form before March 15, 1998. Student housing is now available but should be reserved soon since the number is limited.
