The program is open to undergraduates and first-year graduate students, enrolled in universities and colleges within the United States. Special consideration will be given to the following three groups:
Requirements: Completion of courses in classical mechanics, E\&M, and calculus as well as experience in a high-level programming language such as C or FORTRAN. Instruction in quantum mechanics and differential equations is recommended. Experience in some type of student research program.
Deadline: March 15,1998
Notification: by April 6,1998
Note: For selection purposes, "unofficial" transcripts are acceptable. For example copies, in your, your Department's, or your advisor's possession. These may be sent by Fax or e-mail. Also, recommendation letters sent by e-mail are welcome. By the time of your arrival in Santa Fe, we shall need the official versions of the letter and transcripts(directly from the Registrar's Office).
To apply, fill out the application form . You should receive confirmation of receipt WITHIN 24 HRS.
EXPENSES: The Program will try to cover all or most of your expenses for the two weeks. We shall provide funds for the following: Lodging, DAMOP Conference Fee, Travel, UNM Tuition, and per diem. These expenses will be paid in different manners.
1) Lodging: The program will pay all housing expenses in Santa Fe and Los Alamos, provided that you use designated housing facilities. In Santa Fe, the College of Santa Fe is the designated residence, which also serves as the general student housing for DAMOP, while in Los Alamos, one of the local hotels will serve this purpose. The program will pay for these accommodations in a block transaction directly to the facility; therefore, you will not have any out-of-pocket lodging expenses. Since we have to fund this way, we cannot make separate housing arrangements or provide a housing allotment directly to you. You'll have guaranteed housing if you choose these facilities. If you prefer other arrangements, then you'll have to defray all housing costs yourself.
We shall make all reservations for Housing, both in Santa Fe and Los Alamos. Please DO NOT make reservations directly yourself as this will only confuse matters. If you're accepted, we'll make all the arrangements. Accommodations will generally be shared with another student.
NOTE: Rooms at the College of Santa Fe can be occupied as early as Monday, May 25.
2) DAMOP Conference FEE: We shall also pay your $110 student conference fee for DAMOP directly to the organizers. If you have already paid this, please let us know as soon as possible.
3) TRAVEL/PER DIEM: We shall provide a travel and subsistence stipend of $1000 to cover transportation to Santa Fe and from Los Alamos and per diem expenses such as meals for the 12 days of the CEU. This check will be presented to you at the Orientation session on Tuesday afternoon, May 26.
NOTE: You are responsible for making your own travel reservations for getting to and from your home base and Santa Fe(Los Alamos). Please do so as soon as possible to obtain the cheapest fares. We shall provide transportation between Santa Fe and Los Alamos on Sunday, May 31. Check the DAMOP homepage for transportation options. A shuttle service Roadrunner[505-699-3406] operates between Los Alamos and the Albuquerque airport. You can make your own reservations, or we can coordinate them once we have everyone's departure plans.
4) UNM Tuition: The stipend grant also includes within the $1000 reimbursement the UNM tuition for 1 semester hour(~$120).
